Effective Jan 1, 2025:
-
The IRBs on both the main campus and the medical campus (Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at 麻豆国产AV) will implement a new system of review that takes into consideration whether a study is Social-Behavioral (will be reviewed by the Main Campus/麻豆国产AV IRB) or Biomedical/Clinical (will be reviewed by the Medical Campus/VHS IRB). The assignment will be made by the IRB offices and decisions will be final. A guidance document indicating types of social-behavioral and biomedical studies has been attached and will also be available on each IRB website/software system. Previously approved/legacy studies will remain under the oversight of the IRB that originally approved the study.
-
Please note that all studies involving Sentara Health (patients, investigators, data and/or facilities) must continue to be submitted to the medical campus IRB, regardless of the type of study.
-
The two campuses use different IRB software programs and submissions cannot be transferred between the two programs. Therefore, it is important that investigators who are unsure of how their protocol may be designated should consult with their IRB office prior to submission.
-
An informational session will be held in January to discuss these changes so please stay tuned for this date/location to be confirmed.
-
For any questions, Principal Investigators should contact the IRB for their campus to discuss their study. Main Campus IRB: irb@odu.edu; Medical Campus IRB: IRB-INFO@evms.edu, 757-446-8423. Please refer to the links below for how to access each software and make a submission.

Main Campus New Exempt Committee
-
There will also be a change to the Main Campus review of non-federally funded exempt human subject research protocols. There will no longer be separate college human subjects review committees. Instead, there will be one exempt committee that will run under the university main campus IRB. This exempt committee will be separate from the IRB, with its own committee chair. Note that exempt applications to the main campus will continue to be submitted via IRBNet but will now be submitted to one exempt committee. Further details about exact submission procedures to this new exempt committee will be provided soon.
