Welcome to the 2019-2020 academic year! The campus has gone from deserted to bustling almost overnight, and this is already shaping up to be an exciting fall semester. At the Center for Faculty Development we welcome all returning faculty, and especially our new faculty.
We also welcome everyone to the latest edition of FacSheet, the monthly newsletter produced by the Center for Faculty Development (CFD) and overseen by Technical Writer David Simpson.
If you are new to 麻豆国产AV, you should know that the Center for Faculty Development (CFD) provides comprehensive professional development opportunities for 麻豆国产AV instructional faculty at all levels and stages of their careers. Initiatives are designed to enhance the University's academic culture and support innovations in teaching, research and mentorship. The Center offers a sense of shared community grounded in academic excellence.
We also offer specialized workshops and "pop-up" discussion events as well as more formal "Salons," thus giving faculty many opportunities to come together and discuss ideas relevant to faculty life. Each semester the CFD also hosts the Provost's Spotlight to showcase the accomplishments of distinguished faculty. On Oct. 30 the Provost's Spotlight honoree will be Dr. Shaomin Li, professor and Eminent Scholar in the Department of Management. This event will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the University Theatre, with a reception to follow.
The CFD promotes active learning, global engagement, undergraduate research and other high-impact practices in the classroom through collaborative partnerships across the University. Please check out our website for news about events and workshops. Our knowledge hub on the website is devoted to resources on teaching, research and professional development.
This September the Center has hosted a series of "pop-up" workshop/discussions tied to syllabus design and active learning strategies for the classroom. Pop-ups are short events lasting about an hour where faculty come together with a facilitator to discuss pedagogical concepts and methods of instruction. This month, we have stressed the cultivation of using low-stakes assignments to increase student engagement, writing and learning in the classroom. The response has been absolutely positive.
Several September workshops are yet to come:
